MISSION STATEMENT
The primary purpose of the Echols County Sheriff’s Office is to maintain social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits, while providing professional and courteous law enforcement services. Our fundamental duties are to serve humanity; to safeguard the lives and properties of our citizens; to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation and the peaceful against violence; and to respect the constitutional right of all persons to liberty, equality, and justice. To attain this, the Echols County Sheriff’s Office enforces the law in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing both the statutory and judicial limits of our authority and the constitutional rights of all persons.
The Echols County Sheriff’s Office recognizes that no law enforcement agency can operate at its maximum potential without the support of the citizens that we serve. The Echols County Sheriff’s Office actively solicits and encourages the cooperation of all citizens to reduce and limit the opportunities for crime and to use the resources available to accomplish this goal.

RECENT NEWS
Sheriff Courson reports that on April 30, 2025, deputies responded to the 2900 block of Highway 135 North in reference to a domestic dispute. William Hamm, 17, of Lake Park, was identified as the offender.
Hamm allegedly initiated a verbal altercation with his mother and siblings over his phone being taken away. The situation escalated and became physical, during which Hamm reportedly threatened to kill his mother.
Upon deputies’ arrival, Hamm fled on foot into a wooded area behind the residence. Corporal Lewis and his K9 partner, Nos, arrived on scene and initiated a track. K9 Nos successfully tracked Hamm approximately one mile into the woods, where he was located and taken into custody without incident after complying with deputies’ commands.
Hamm is facing multiple charges, including:
• Felony Terroristic Threats or Acts
• Battery (Family Violence) – Misdemeanor
• Two counts of Cruelty to Children in the 3rd Degree (Family Violence) – Misdemeanor
• Criminal Trespass – Misdemeanor

Sheriff Courson states that on March 24, 2025, a good Samaritan reported an incident of illegal dumping of trailer loads of construction material at the 700 block of Howell Road (Mayday Beach).
After being provided with a detailed description of the vehicle and tag number, an investigation was initiated which led to the arrest of Rodney Pierce, 51 of Mayday Pierce was arrested and charged with Unlawful Dumping and taken to the Lowndes County Jail for processing. He also faces the possibility of paying over $800 in restitution to the county for debris removal and cleanup.
